for children with cancer
BALDY, THE INSPIRATION
In 1982, Serge Ernst was affected by childhood cancer when his best friend's daughter,
Marine, contracted the disease when she was 4. Almost 30 years later, in 2011,
Ernst (illustrator) and Zidrou (writer) created a comic book called “Baldy”
that tells a touching story of the everyday life of a litle girl,
Zita, suffering from leukemia.
Childhood illness is a delicate and challenging subject matter for a comic book,
yet “Baldy,” published by BAMBOO succeeded at being the first book of its kind.
Readers and critics in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Spain have unanimously
welcomed this modest, tender, quirky and emotional story. “Baldy” has received
a total of 10 awards and has been featured in numerous media outlet to this day.
